They’ve become so mainstreamed now that it’s hard to remember – but during the late 80s and early 90s, no musical act was more dangerous that N.W.A.
Not only did their lyrics get them banned from radio, you also couldn’t even say their name – which made the initials “NWA” a much appreciated concession.
The group didn’t make many concessions, which made N.W.A exactly the rebelliousness many people believe Rock to be about in the first place. The group’s nomination to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame arrived in 2012.
Now there’s a film coming out this week about the history of N.W.A. – and while it might not be the movie your church group goes to see, the trailer does look very compelling. I love Rock & Roll biopics to begin with – and as shown by the enormous success of the TV series Empire, this film is probably going to be huge. One more on my list to see.
As part of the film’s promotion, someone came up with what might be one of the most brilliant marketing ideas ever. It’s the http://Straight Outta Compton meme generator, and even your grandma is doing it.
The generator lets you insert a picture and caption into the familiar “straight outta”, substituting the word of your choosing for “Compton”.
And a LOT of the choices are pretty funny.
And while you might not agree with the politics of doing so, you have to hand it to marketing department behind the movie: they apparently even managed to troll the GOP presidential debate.
